Create your own biodegradable bioplastic using cornstarch, water, and vinegar. A soothing, hands-on project that results in flexible, customizable sheets perfect for craft projects.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 4 cups water, divided
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon glycerin (optional)
  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or heat-proof spatula
  • Baking sheet or flat tray
  • Parchment paper or silicone mat
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cookie cutter or rolling pin (optional)
  • Clean damp cloth and bowl of cool water

Instructions

  1. Measure and mix the dry and wet parts slowly.
  2. Warm 3 cups of water in your saucepan over low heat.
  3. Pour the cornstarch slurry into the saucepan while stirring slowly.
  4. Stir patiently as the mixture thickens.
  5. Remove the pan from heat when the mass pulls away from the sides.
  6. Spread and smooth with damp tools or a spatula.
  7. Let it cool and form a skin.
  8. Trim, cut, or press textures once mostly cool.
  9. Cure or finish as desired.

Notes

For added colors, rub in natural pigments like turmeric or beet powder. Pieces can soften in humid spaces; store properly.
