Ingredients

  • Granulated sugar
  • Water (1 cup for every 2 cups of sugar)
  • A heavy-bottomed saucepan
  • A candy thermometer
  • Clear glass or plastic spheres or molds
  • Wooden skewers or string
  • A spoon or spatula
  • A measuring cup
  • A heatproof bowl or jar
  • Food-safe glue or a small clamp
  • A funnel or steady hand for filling
  • A mesh or fine strainer
  • Protective gloves and towel

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace and tools.
  2. Measure water and sugar.
  3. Heat gently while stirring.
  4. Add the remaining sugar gradually.
  5. Remove from heat and skim.
  6. Seed your string or skewer.
  7. Fill the sphere or mold carefully.
  8. Place the seed in the center.
  9. Cool and wait in a quiet spot.
  10. Observe growth and be patient.
  11. Finish and gently dry.
  12. Seal if you wish and display.
