Create a stunning lava effect in a jar using simple materials like oil, water, and salt for a calming sensory experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 clear glass jar with lid
  • 1 cup warm water
  • Liquid food coloring or dilute watercolor ink
  • 1 cup vegetable oil or light mineral oil
  • Table salt (coarse or fine)
  • Small spoon or measuring spoon (optional)
  • Pipette or dropper (optional)
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Tray or towel to catch spills
  • Glitter or biodegradable sequins (optional)
  • Small flashlight or warm lamp for display (optional)

Instructions

  1. Warm and color the water. Pour the warm water into a small bowl, add a few drops of food coloring, and stir.
  2. Pour water into the jar until it reaches one-third to halfway up.
  3. Add oil slowly. Using a funnel or steady hand, pour the oil into the jar until it fills the space above the water.
  4. Let the jar rest to allow the two layers to become distinct.
  5. Prepare your salt by scooping a small pinch onto a spoon.
  6. Drop the salt into the oil layer and watch them fall, pulling colored water with them.
  7. Observe the lava effect as the color rises and drifts within the oil.
  8. Adjust temperatures and salt sizes to experiment with motion.
  9. Finish or seal the jar to keep the display long-lasting.

Notes

Use food-grade materials for a safe, non-toxic setup, especially if kids are involved.
