A calming and colorful craft that involves growing beautiful crystal formations from common kitchen ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Table salt, sugar, or Epsom salt
  • Warm water
  • Clear jars or shallow dishes
  • Small pebbles, glass beads, or stones (optional)
  • Food coloring or liquid watercolors
  • A stirring stick or spoon
  • Measuring cup and teaspoon
  • Paper towels and a tray
  • A fine-mesh strainer (optional)
  • Labels or small sticky notes

Instructions

  1. Warm gentle water until it feels warm to the wrist. Stir in salt or sugar until it dissolves.
  2. Let the solution settle until it looks clear. Use a strainer for cleaner results.
  3. Add a few drops of color to the solution and stir slowly.
  4. Place stones or beads at the bottom of jars or trays to act as seeds for the crystals.
  5. Pour the colored solution over stones or into the dish, filling to a level that allows air at the top.
  6. Find a quiet place to leave the jars without disturbance.
  7. Check after 12 to 24 hours for growth and observe daily.
  8. When crystals reach the desired size, carefully lift them and let excess liquid drain.
  9. If growth slows, refresh the solution by adding more salt or sugar.

Notes

Salt crystals tend to be blocky while sugar creates softer shapes. Epsom salt results in slender needles. Keep records of your observations as the crystals grow.
