Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup gum base or natural chicle
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Food-grade flavoring oil (optional)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Small saucepan
  • Candy thermometer (optional)
  • Silicone mat or parchment paper
  • Plastic wrap or airtight container
  • Wooden spoon or heatproof spatula
  • Small cookie cutter or knife (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace and tools.
  2. Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in the pan.
  3. Heat slowly on medium-low until dissolved.
  4. Bring the syrup to a low boil.
  5. Remove the pan from heat and let cool briefly.
  6. Add the gum base in small pieces to the warm syrup.
  7. Knead the mixture gently until smooth.
  8. Add flavor and color as desired.
  9. Roll the gum into ribbons or logs.
  10. Let the pieces rest at room temperature for several hours.

Notes

Keep pieces in an airtight container dusted with powdered sugar to prevent sticking.
