  • Water, about 3/4 cup (warm)
  • Mixing pot and wooden spoon
  • Rolling pin or a bottle
  • Cookie cutters or small molds
  • Straw or skewer for hanging holes
  • Acrylic paints or water-based pigment inks
  • Small paintbrushes
  • Clear acrylic sealer spray or matte varnish (optional)
  • Twine, ribbon, or thin cord
  • Sandpaper fine grit (optional)
  • Baking tray and parchment paper or silicone mat

Instructions

  1. Combine the baking soda, cornstarch, and water in a small pot.
  2. Stir gently as the water warms.
  3. Heat the mixture over low to medium heat.
  4. Stir slowly and steadily until the mixture thickens into a soft paste.
  5. Transfer the paste to a cool surface and let it rest for a minute.
  6. Knead gently until the dough becomes smooth.
  7. Roll the dough between two sheets of parchment to an even thickness.
  8. Press cookie cutters into the dough and lift gently.
  9. Poke a hole near the top of each shape with a straw or skewer.
  10. Place the shapes on a parchment-lined tray and let them air dry a few hours.
  11. Bake them at low heat (about 175 F) in the oven for 1 to 2 hours if preferred.
  12. Sand any rough edges if you like when fully dry and cool.
  13. Paint the ornaments with thin layers of acrylic paint.
  14. Let the paint dry fully, then seal with a clear spray for protection.
  15. Thread twine through the hole and tie a small knot to hang.
